Track 7: Global, International, and Cultural Issues in IS

  • Track Description

    The global track at ICIS 2011 will champion IS research that explicitly describes situations that involve a global, international or cross-cultural context. Multi-country and multi-cultural papers as well as submissions that explore IS issues in global and multinational enterprises will be especially well received. We are open to all methodological and epistemological approaches and perspectives.

    Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

    • Cross-cultural IS Applications. For example, the adoption/use of a global corporate IS (such as an ERP, KMS or CRM application) in the UK headquarters, as well as branch offices in Peru and Paraguay.
    • Global Virtual Teams. For example, the distribution of work across a virtual team that is located in two or more countries/cultures. If the two (or more) cultures are located within the same country, then a stronger case will have to be built for this to be considered to be global. Ideally, more than one country will be involved.
    • Case Studies. Case studies that are situated in one country, but whose findings are different from those that would be expected (based on prior research) in another country, especially where the country of the case study is not the one where the theory/technology was first developed. E.g., a qualitative case study into the acceptance/use of DSS applications in China, with reference to the mainstream Western literature on DSS acceptance/use in Europe or North America. Theoretical developments based on the new context will be warmly appreciated.
    • Critical Analyses. For example, an assessment of the way IS applications act so as to empower or enslave stakeholders in different cultural contexts. It might be that the same IS empowers some people and enslaves others.
